In 2004, the United States used 8 million tons of office paper (3.2 billion reams). That’s the equivalent of 178 million trees!
Many of the copies and printouts we make are unnecessary – they are made out of habit, without considering more economical, convenient and sustainable options. Many others could be printed less expensively by reducing the use of color, printing on both sides and organizing the information more efficiently. The cost of some documents, such as annual reports, can be greatly reduced by printing a much shorter executive summary and posting the full document online.
Photocopiers are more efficient that desktop printers, so costs can be reduced by making one printed copy and the rest as photocopies. Some jobs that have traditionally been photocopied can actually be printed less expensively by an offset printer!
As members of the University community, we have a responsibility to do our part to reduce excessive photocopies and printouts. The “Save The Paper” initiative is designed to provide the information, training and tools to help us all be better stewards of the budget … and the environment.
